Maghe Sankranti Mela at Dhunge Sanghu

Maghe Sankranti Mela at Dhunge Sanghu & Sita Paila

Maghe Sankranti, one of Nepal’s most auspicious festivals, marks the beginning of the holy month of Magh and the sun’s transition into a new phase. It is a time for spiritual cleansing, good health, and prosperity, celebrated with great devotion across the country.

The Dhunge Sanghu Mela, held at the historic “stone bridge” (Dhunge Sanghu), is the main highlight of the celebration. This traditional site becomes a vibrant hub of religious and cultural activity, attracting large numbers of devotees and visitors. Early in the morning, people gather to take holy baths in nearby rivers, believing it will purify the soul and bring blessings for the year ahead.

The mela is especially well-known in local culture and folklore, even celebrated in a popular Nepali song that mentions “Dhunge Sanghu ko Mela,” reflecting its deep cultural significance and long-standing tradition. The area fills with music, laughter, and festive spirit, making it not just a religious event but a memorable cultural experience.

Visitors can explore colorful stalls, enjoy traditional entertainment, and taste special Maghe Sankranti foods such as sesame (til) sweets, chaku, ghee, and boiled yam (tarul). These foods are both symbolic and nourishing during the winter season.

Alongside Dhunge Sanghu, the Sita Paila area also hosts a Maghe Sankranti mela, contributing to the overall festive atmosphere. However, the Dhunge Sanghu mela remains the central attraction, known for its historic importance, cultural popularity, and strong community participation.

Together, these celebrations showcase the rich traditions of Maghe Sankranti, with Dhunge Sanghu standing out as a cherished symbol of heritage, faith, and festivity.
